The emails we send

The three optional emails and how to turn them on or off, the emails that always come, and why we never write to your child or send notifications.

Safety and privacyUpdated

We write to you about your account and your children's books, and never to bring you back. Three emails are optional and off until you turn them on. We never email your child, and TaleTykes sends no push notifications, so nothing we do can make a device buzz.

The three optional emails

In SettingsThe switchWhat it sends
"A summary on Mondays""Email me what my readers read"A short note on Mondays saying what your readers finished, roughly how many words they read, and their favorite book. Nothing is sent in a week when nobody read.
"A nudge before bedtime""Email me an hour before story time"One email a day, to you, an hour before the earliest bedtime you have set, with the subject "About an hour until story time".
"Hearing about new things""Tell me when something new arrives"News about TaleTykes, a few times a year at most.

To turn one on or off:

  1. Open Settings and choose Emails and reminders.
  2. Press the switch. It saves straight away.

The bedtime nudge needs at least one reader with a bedtime. Until then its switch cannot be turned on, and the page tells you where to set one; see Time limits and bedtime.

Unsubscribing without signing in

Each of the three has a link in the email itself that turns it off without signing in. Many mail apps also show their own unsubscribe button for these three. The link only turns off the kind of email it came in, and you can turn it back on in Settings at any time.

The emails that always come

These are about something that happened to your account or to a book, so they have no switch.

  • Signing in and your account: "Confirm your email address", "Set a new password", "Welcome to TaleTykes", emails confirming a change of address, "We have updated one of our notices", and emails about closing, suspending or reopening your account.
  • Books: a book is ready, is waiting for you, could not be finished, or is being checked, and our answer when you ask us to look at a book again.
  • Payments: "Your free trial ends on" a date, "Your payment did not go through" and its reminders, "Your card is about to expire", "That is sorted", "Your plan has ended" and "Your gifted plan has ended".
  • Your child's safety: safety alerts, which cannot be turned off. See Safety alerts.
  • Your readers growing up: a note about 30 days before a reader turns thirteen, and another on the day, if you have told us when that is.
  • Your data: "Your copy of everything is ready", when you asked us for a copy.
  • Quiet accounts: "We are about to close your account", if the account has no readers and nobody has signed in for a long time. It is not a reminder to come back.
  • Our replies: "We have replied", followed by the subject of your question.
  • Occasional service messages about your own account, which say there is nothing to unsubscribe from.

Some emails go to other people because of something you did, such as inviting someone to read along or sending someone a gift.

Replies to your questions

When you ask us something from Help in your dashboard, our answer is on that page, not in the email. The email only tells you we have replied, because an answer might mention your child, and an email is a copy we cannot take back.

If our emails are not arriving

If mail to your address comes back undelivered, we stop sending most emails to it, and Settings shows "We cannot reach you by email". See Emails not arriving.

If you think you are getting an email you should not, write to support@taletykes.com or see Contact.

The checks on what your child asks for, on the finished story and on every picture, what your child sees when a check says no, and when a person reads something.

  • What your child can type or say

The few places your child can use their own words, what is refused, and what happens to your child's voice when they speak.

  • Safety alerts

When we tell you about something your child wrote or said, what the emails say, where to read the alerts, what to do, and the help lines we list.

  • The shared library, comments and the weekly board

What other children can see of your child, how reader names, hearts, comments and the weekly board work, and the switches on each reader's Safety tab.
