When new children arrive, you can add them yourself from the Roster, or let them ask to join on one of the class's own devices while you watch. Nothing about a child is kept as part of the class until you say yes.
Let children ask for a week
- Open the class and go to the Roster.
- Under "Children asking to join", choose "Let children ask for a week".
For the next week, the class's devices show an "I'm new here" tile after the students' names. Choose "Stop children asking" to close it early. Anybody still waiting is told to ask you.
On a device the whole school shares, a child can also type the class code, or scan a poster whose square code ends in &join=1, to go straight to asking.
What a child does
- They tap "I'm new here", pick an animal, and type their first name.
- If somebody in the class has the same first name, they are asked for the first letter of their last name.
- They see "Ask your teacher to say yes" and wait. Their animal shows on the class screen as "Waiting".
A child can never type a whole surname: anything after the first letter is dropped.
Say yes or no
Children who asked appear under "Children asking to join" on the Roster, and as a number beside Classes in the menu. There is no email about it, because you are in the room. For each child you can:
- Correct their first name and add the last initial the class list needs.
- Choose "Or already in the class as" when it is a child who is already on the list and forgot their pictures.
- Choose how they get their pictures: "Show on the device", which is where they are standing, or "Print a card".
- Choose "Add to the class", or "Not in this class" to say no.
A child you say no to is told to ask you, and what they typed is removed.
How they get their pictures
With "Show on the device", the child's screen changes to "Your teacher said yes." and a "See my pictures" button. Their pictures or PIN are made at that moment and shown once. They then tap them in, which signs them in and helps them remember. If nobody taps the button within half an hour, print them a new card from the Roster.
With "Print a card", their card appears straight away for you to print, as when you add students yourself.
What is kept
An ask nobody answers is deleted after a day. Once you answer, the name the child typed is removed from the ask, and the ask itself is deleted within a week. What is kept about a child you added is the same as for anybody you add yourself.
