Licenses and credits
Last updated November 3, 2026
TaleTykes is built with the work of many people. This page credits the fonts, data and software we use and says which license each one comes under. If you think we have missed a credit or got one wrong, write to legal@taletykes.com and we will fix it.
Fonts
The website serves every font from our own domain. The fonts are downloaded when we build the site, so no request goes to a font service from your device or your child's. The iPhone and iPad app uses the fonts built into iOS.

About the SIL Open Font License
The SIL Open Font License 1.1 lets anyone use, study, copy, change and share a font, including in commercial products, as long as the font isn't sold on its own and its copyright notice and license travel with it. Changed versions can't use the font's reserved name. The full license text is at openfontlicense.org. Each font's copyright notice is kept in the software package we build from.
Icons
Interface icons on the website follow the shapes of Lucide, redrawn to our grid. Lucide is released under the ISC License, which lets anyone use, copy, change and share the icons as long as the copyright and license notice is kept. Lucide is copyright Lucide Contributors, and its icons that come from Feather are copyright Cole Bemis. The animal pictures children choose from to sign in, and the picture tiles in lessons, are our own work.
Word and sound data
The CMU Pronouncing Dictionary
Our decodability checks use the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary (cmudict), copyright 1993–2015 Carnegie Mellon University, under its BSD-style license. We use it only as the source of pronunciations when we check whether a child can sound out every word in a book. We have added our own corrections for some words children read often, where the dictionary's pronunciation doesn't match the way the sound is taught. Those corrections are our own work. The dictionary's copyright notice and license are kept in our source code.
Scope and sequence, heart words and lessons
Our order of sounds, our heart word lists, our lessons and our skill graph are our own work. They follow the general order used by widely adopted structured-literacy programs and public state standards, but don't copy any program's materials.
Reading-speed norms
When we show a child's oral reading speed next to grade norms, we use the compiled oral reading fluency norms published by Jan Hasbrouck and Gerald Tindal in 2017 ("An update to compiled ORF norms", Technical Report No. 1702, Behavioral Research and Teaching, University of Oregon). We show them as ranges for the child's grade and time of year, not as a score or a rank. Grades 7 and 8 are shown against the grade 6 spring range as a reference. These comparisons are a check-in for grown-ups. TaleTykes does not diagnose or screen for any condition.
Open-source software
TaleTykes is built with open-source software, including:
- Next.js and React, for the website;
- TypeScript, for most of our code;
- Tailwind CSS, for styles;
- Drizzle ORM and PostgreSQL, for the database;
- Zod, for checking data;
- Better Auth, for grown-ups' sign-in;
- jose, for signed tokens;
- the Stripe libraries, for payments;
- qrcode, for codes that link a device;
- Swift and SwiftUI, for the iPhone and iPad app.
Each of these is used under its own open-source license, such as the MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD or ISC license. Those licenses let us use the software as long as we keep its copyright and license notices, which we do.

Pictures on our marketing pages are drawn by TaleTykes, illustrated with AI by TaleTykes, or licensed stock photography used under the photo service's license. No photograph on our website shows a real child's face. Pictures inside books are made as our How TaleTykes uses AI page describes.
