Decodable text checker

Paste a page of a book or a worksheet, pick the phonics a child has been taught, and see which words they can sound out, which are heart words, and which need a sound they haven't met yet.

Separated by commas. Names are not counted against the text, the way our own books don’t count them.

What a child at this phase can read

Paste some text above to see it marked.

How it decides

Each word is split into its spellings, so “ship” is sh, i and p rather than four letters, and every spelling is checked against the ones taught up to the phase you picked. If all of them have been taught, the word can be sounded out. If one hasn’t, the word is marked, and the list underneath names the spelling and the phase that teaches it.

Heart words are the few each phase teaches whole, because part of them can’t be sounded out yet. Every phase’s heart words are on their own page. Names you type in are left out, as they are in our books.

The phases run from kindergarten to 2nd to 3rd grade, in the order our books follow. The whole order lists the sounds in each. Your child’s school may teach them in a slightly different order, so pick the phase whose sounds are closest to what they have been taught.

What it doesn’t do

It reads spelling, not sound, so it can’t tell the ow in “snow” from the ow in “cow”, and a word it marks as decodable may still need the right one of two sounds. It doesn’t judge whether a text is a good read, how long its sentences are, or whether a child will understand it. And it doesn’t rewrite anything: it marks the words and leaves the rest to you.

Nothing you paste is sent anywhere or kept. The check runs in this browser tab, and the text is gone when you close it.
