We have two plans for families, Sprout and Grove. Both give you the same reading tools, the same safety checks and the same controls. What changes is how many books arrive each month and how many children the plan covers.
The two plans side by side
| What you get | Sprout | Grove |
|---|---|---|
| Paid monthly | $12.99 a month | $24.99 a month |
| Paid yearly | $129.90 a year | $249.90 a year |
| Books each month | 15 | 40 |
| Readers the plan covers | 2 | 4 |
| Extra readers you can add | Up to 1 | Up to 4 |
| Most readers in all | 3 | 8 |
Prices are in US dollars. Sales tax is added at checkout in the places where we are registered to collect it.
What a book costs from your allowance
Your monthly books are shared by everyone in your family rather than split between your children. A picture book, which is what readers aged 2 to 7 get, uses 1 book from the allowance. A chapter book, which is what readers aged 7 to 12 get, is much longer and uses 2. So a family with two younger readers gets more books out of Sprout than a family with two older ones.
The allowance starts again each month and does not roll over. If you run out before the month ends, you can buy extra books, which never expire, and we always use your monthly books before the ones you bought.
Paying yearly
If you pay for a year at once, you pay for 2 fewer months than you would paying monthly. Your books still arrive a month at a time, so a yearly plan gives you the same allowance each month as a monthly one. It does not hand you a year's books on the first day.
How to choose
Sprout suits a family with one or two children, especially younger ones reading picture books. Grove suits a bigger family, or a family whose children are reading chapter books, because those use more of the allowance.
If you have three children, you can stay on Sprout and add an extra reader for $4.99 a month, or $49.90 a year on a yearly plan, which brings 5 more books a month with it. Sprout takes only one extra reader, so a fourth child needs Grove, which covers 4 readers and brings 40 books a month. Grove can take up to 4 extra readers of its own.
Everything else is the same on both plans. Chapter books and series are open to families on either plan, because the kind of book your child gets follows their age group, not your plan.
Starting, changing and stopping
- The free trial starts at the card step when you set up your account. It lasts 3 days, or longer if a code adds days, has 2 books, and is always for Sprout, paid monthly. How the free trial works explains what happens when it ends.
- You can change plan, or switch between monthly and yearly, from Plan and books. Change your plan walks through it.
- You can cancel at any time, and your plan runs to the end of the period you have already paid for. See Cancel your plan.
