Who is reading, and the Grown-ups button

How your child picks their name and signs in, how to swap readers, how you get back to your own pages, and when a reader is signed out.

Sharing and devicesUpdated

On a device you have set up, your child starts at "Who is reading today?", picks their own picture and signs in. When they are finished, the "Grown-ups" button at the bottom of their screen lets the next reader take over, or lets you back into your own pages with your password.

Who is reading today?

This screen lists your readers as large pictures with their names. It opens from the "Who is reading?" button on your Home page, in "Reading on this device", or under "This device" on the "More" page of a phone.

  1. On a device you have set up, press "Who is reading?" and hand the device to your child.
  2. Your child taps their own picture.
  3. They tap their numbers, or their pictures in order. "Someone else" takes them back to the list.
  4. Their own Home screen opens. The first time they sign in, Pip's welcome comes first.

The "Start" button on a reader's card, for example "Start Mia reading", skips the list and opens that reader's sign-in straight away.

The screen opens only while you are signed in to your own account on the device. If the device is not set up, it shows "A grown-up needs to set this device up" and a "Set this device up" button. Trusted devices, and why your child needs one explains why.

If your child gets it wrong, they see "That is not quite right. Try again." After five wrong tries in a row they see "Too many tries. Ask a grown-up to help." and cannot sign in for 15 minutes, unless you press the "Let ... try again" button with their name, such as "Let Mia try again", on their Safety tab. PINs and picture passwords has more.

Swap to another reader

The bar at the bottom of your child's screen has "Home", "Make", "Books" and "Grown-ups".

  1. Press "Grown-ups".
  2. Under "For grown-ups", press "Someone else is reading".
  3. The reader is signed out, and "Who is reading today?" opens for the next one.

Each device allows five sign-in tries in 15 minutes, right or wrong, so if readers swap many times in a short while, the next one may see "Too many tries. Ask a grown-up to help." for up to 15 minutes, even with the right PIN or pictures. Your child cannot sign in explains what to do.

Get back to your own pages

  1. Press "Grown-ups".
  2. Type the password for your TaleTykes account in "Your password".
  3. Press "Go to the grown-up bit".

If the password is wrong, you see "That password does not match." When it is right, the reader is signed out on that device and your pages open. There is no separate grown-up PIN; it is the password you sign in with. If you have forgotten it, see Resetting your password.

The password is asked for so that the settings you chose cannot be changed by somebody tapping through. While a reader is signed in, typing the address of one of your pages takes the device back to your child's Home screen.

When a reader is signed out

With our current settings, a reader stays signed in for up to four hours from when they signed in. After that, the device shows "Who is reading today?" again, and your child signs in again with their PIN or pictures.

A reader is also signed out when:

  • somebody presses "Someone else is reading" or "Go to the grown-up bit" on that device
  • you press "Forget this device" on that device
  • you press "Sign ... out everywhere" on their Safety tab, such as "Sign Mia out everywhere", or change how they sign in
  • you remove the reader

Sign a reader out everywhere explains the last two.

On a guardian's device

A grown-up you made a guardian sees their own readers, if they have any, and yours on "Who is reading today?". On their device, "Go to the grown-up bit" asks for the guardian's own password, not yours.

If you remove a guardian, or change them to "Can look", a reader signed in on their device is signed out the next time the device is used.
