Sign a reader out everywhere

Each reader's Safety tab shows how many devices they are signed in on, and has a button that ends all of those sign-ins at once. Use it when a tablet goes missing, when a device has left the house, or when you are not sure where your child is still signed in. Only the family a reader belongs to can do this; a grown-up you share with cannot.

Sign a reader out everywhere

1. Go to Readers, then your child, then the "Safety" tab.
2. Find the card called "How ... signs in", with your child's name in it, and the part headed "Signed-in devices". It says how many devices they are signed in on, or "They are not signed in anywhere at the moment."
3. Press "Sign ... out everywhere", for example "Sign Mia out everywhere". The button cannot be pressed while they are not signed in anywhere.
4. Press "Sign them out" to confirm.

The page then tells you how many devices they were signed out of.

Every sign-in ends, including one on a device that has gone missing. The devices you set up stay set up, and your child's PIN or pictures stay the same, so your child can sign in again straight away on a device you set up.

Change how they sign in

If somebody else might know your child's PIN or pictures, change them as well.

1. In the same card, press "Change how they sign in".
2. Choose a new PIN or a new set of pictures.
3. Press "Save how they sign in".

Saving a new PIN or set of pictures also signs your child out everywhere, so that anyone who knew the old one cannot carry on. PINs and picture passwords has more on choosing one.

If a tablet is lost or stolen

A device you set up stays set up until you forget it, and you can only forget a device while you are holding it. So do all of these:

1. Sign each of your readers out everywhere, as above.
2. Change your own password in Settings > Account and security > "Password", with "Change password". Any other device signed in to your account is signed out, so nobody can open your pages, or pick a reader on "Who is reading today?", on the missing tablet without the new password.
3. If whoever has the tablet might know a reader's PIN or pictures, change how that reader signs in.

Books kept on the tablet for reading without the internet stay on it, and we cannot remove them from somewhere else. Two-step sign-in adds a code to your own sign-in, which makes a missing device harder to use.

A guardian's device

A grown-up you made a guardian can sign your readers in on a device they set up. To stop that, go to Settings > Sharing with other grown-ups and either change them to "Can look" or press "Remove" and then "Stop sharing". Their device stops signing your readers in the next time it is used, and a reader signed in on it is signed out. You do not need to sign your readers out everywhere as well, although it does no harm.

If a guardian loses a device of their own, they can change their own password, as in step 2 above.

Other ways a reader is signed out

• "Someone else is reading" or "Go to the grown-up bit" signs a reader out on that device only.
• "Forget this device" signs out whoever is reading on that device.
• Removing a reader signs them out everywhere, and so does closing your account for every reader. See Removing a reader and Closing your account.
