Two-step sign-in

How to add a code from an authenticator app to your sign-in, keep your backup codes safe, and turn it off again.

Your accountUpdated

Two-step sign-in is optional. With it on, signing in needs your password and a six-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, so somebody who learns your password still cannot get in. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, and you can turn it off again at any time.

Turning it on

You need an authenticator app on your phone. Any authenticator app works, such as the one built into your phone's password manager.

  1. Go to Settings > Account and security and find "Two-step sign-in".
  2. Type your password under "Your password" and choose "Set up two-step sign-in".
  3. In your authenticator app, scan the square on the page, or type in the key shown under "The key".
  4. Type the six numbers the app shows into "Code from your app", and choose "Turn it on". The numbers change every thirty seconds, so use the ones showing now.
  5. The page now shows your backup codes. Save them, tick "I have saved these codes" and choose "Done".

Nothing changes until step 4 works. If you choose "Not now" or leave the page before then, your account stays as it was. Once it is on, the card says "Signing in needs your password and a code from your app."

Your backup codes

You get 10 backup codes when you turn two-step sign-in on. Each one signs you in once, in place of a code from your app, if you do not have your phone. We show them only once, so write them down or keep them in your password manager. "Copy them" copies the whole set at once.

To make a new set, for example when you have used some or cannot find them:

  1. In Settings > Account and security, choose "Make new backup codes".
  2. Type your password and choose "Make new codes".
  3. Save the new codes, tick "I have saved these codes" and choose "Done".

Your old backup codes stop working as soon as the new ones are made.

Signing in with a code

After your password, the sign-in page says "One more step" and asks you to "Enter the six-digit code". It calls this two-factor authentication, which is the same thing.

  1. Open your authenticator app and find TaleTykes.
  2. Type the six numbers it shows and choose "Continue".

If you do not have your phone, type one of your backup codes in the same box, exactly as it was shown to you. The code step allows five tries and lasts ten minutes. After that, go back to the sign-in page and start again with your password. After ten wrong codes in a row, no code is accepted for 15 minutes.

Setting a new password through "Forgotten your password?" does not skip this step. You still need a code afterwards.

If you lose your phone

If you still have your backup codes, sign in with one of them. Then turn two-step sign-in off and on again, as described on this page, to connect the authenticator app on your new phone. You get a new set of backup codes when you do.

If you have lost your phone and your backup codes, write to us at support@taletykes.com and tell us the email address on the account. We can remove the second step for you. When we do, we email you "Two-step sign-in is off on your account", and you can then sign in with your password alone and set it up again.

Turning it off

  1. In Settings > Account and security, choose "Turn it off" under "Two-step sign-in".
  2. A sheet asks "Turn off two-step sign-in?". Type your password and choose "Turn it off".

From then on, your password alone signs you in, and your backup codes stop working.
