The grown-up check

Before a grown-up page opens on a device where a child is signed in, you hold a button and type a number. Here is how it works.

Updated November 2, 2026 · 2 min read

The grown-up check keeps children out of adult pages. If a child is signed in on the device and you open any grown-up page, you are sent to this check first. It takes a few seconds.

Steps

  1. Open any grown-up page. You land on the check automatically.
  2. Press and hold the button for 2 seconds.
  3. Read the puzzle. It shows a number in words, for example: "Type the number forty-two using digits."
  4. Type the number with digits and submit.
  5. You pass. The child is signed out and the family page opens.

If you get it wrong

You get a new puzzle. A puzzle stays valid for 5 minutes. After that you get a new one too, so you can hold the button again.

Why it signs the child out

A device holds one child at a time, and passing the check ends that child's session so it doesn't carry over to adult pages.

Common questions

Why am I asked when no child is nearby?

A child is still signed in on that browser. Children stay signed in for a set time. See How long children stay signed in.

Does the check replace my own sign-in?

No. You still sign in as an adult. The check only tells us a grown-up is at the screen.

Can my child pass it?

The check asks for a held button and a number written in words, which is meant to be harder for a young child. It is not a lock for every situation, so keep adult devices signed out.

I'm a teacher. Does it apply to me?

It applies to any adult page on a device where a child is signed in.

I keep getting new puzzles.

Check that you typed digits, such as 42, and not words. Then try again within 5 minutes.
