TaleTykes has two separate language settings. One is yours: it decides the language of the grown-ups' pages and of our emails to you. The other belongs to each reader: it decides the language their new stories are written in. The two do not have to match, so you can read your settings in English while your child's stories are written in Spanish, or the other way round.
| Setting | Where it is | The choices | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your language | Settings > Account and security > "Language" | "English", "Español" | The grown-ups' pages that have been translated, and our emails that have a Spanish version |
| A reader's story language | Readers > your child > Settings > "Reading" > "Stories are written in" | "English (British spelling)", "English (American spelling)", "Español" | The books made for that reader from now on, the voice that reads them and what Pip says |
Your own language
- Go to Settings > Account and security and find "Language".
- Choose "English" or "Español".
- Choose "Save language".
The next page you open is in the language you chose, and we use it again each time you sign in. The English choice uses British spelling on the grown-ups' pages.
This setting covers the parts of TaleTykes that have been translated so far, and our emails that have a Spanish version. Some pages and emails are still in English only. When an email has no Spanish version, we send it in English rather than not at all. Our public pages and our notices, such as the privacy notice and the notice to parents, are in English.
Before you sign in, the sign-in and sign-up pages follow the language your browser asks for, unless you have already chosen one on that device. The confirmation email and the email for a new password come in the language of the page you were using when you asked for them.
The language of your child's stories
Each reader has their own setting.
- Go to Readers and choose your child.
- Open the Settings tab and find "Reading".
- Choose a language under "Stories are written in", then choose "Save".
The change applies to books made from now on. Books already on your child's shelf stay in the language they were written in. Your child's own screens follow their story language too.
Both English choices give your child stories in English. The languages stories are written in explains what changes with each choice, including the voice that reads the books.
If a page is in the wrong language
On each device, your pages and your child's screens share one language choice. It switches to your child's story language when a reader signs in, and back to yours when you type your password under "Grown-ups" and choose "Go to the grown-up bit". If your child's sign-in ended another way, for example with "Someone else is reading", your pages may follow your browser's language or your child's. To put it right, do either of these:
- Go to Settings > Account and security, choose your language under "Language" and choose "Save language".
- Sign out and sign in again, which brings back the language saved on your account.
If a page is still in the wrong language after that, tell us from Help in your dashboard.
