Before we hold anything about a child, you read our notice to parents and our privacy notice, and we record which version of each one you read. When we change the wording of either notice, what you agreed to was the old wording, so we ask you to read the new version. The page that asks is called "One thing to read", and reading it takes a minute.
Why it happens
Each of our notices has a version number and a date on which that version takes effect. A new version interrupts nobody before its date. From that day, if the version you agreed to is older, we ask you to read the new one.
Two notices are checked this way, the two you read before adding your first reader: the notice to parents and the privacy notice. When we ask, nothing about your readers has changed, and nothing has been added or removed from your account.
Reading the updated notice
- Open the notice page. Opening Home or Readers takes you there too, unless your account only reads along with another family.
- The page, "One thing to read", lists each notice that has changed, with a short summary of what is new. Each title opens the full notice.
- Tick "I have read it", or "I have read them" when there is more than one, and choose "Carry on".
That is all. You do not need to repeat the card check.
What waits until you have read it
Until you have read the updated notice:
- You cannot add a reader.
- You cannot start "Their just-right level" check on a reader's Progress page, or act on its result.
- You cannot use "Have it read aloud" on a chapter book.
- Home and Readers take you to the notice before they open, unless your account has no readers of its own and only reads along with another family.
If you try one of these, the page asks you to read the updated notices first.
What never waits
- Removing a reader.
- Closing your account.
- Your children's reading, which carries on as before.
- Settings, Plan and books, and each reader's own pages, which all still open.
A new notice will never stop you from taking a reader, or your whole account, out of TaleTykes. Removing a reader and Closing your account explain how.
The email about it
We may also send you an email called "We have updated one of our notices", with a button, "Read what changed", that opens the same page. We send it ourselves to a family that has not yet read a new version, rather than to everybody at once, and reading the notice is the only thing it asks of you.
If you are ever unsure whether an email really came from us, do not use its link. Open TaleTykes yourself, sign in and go to the notice page.
Seeing what you have agreed to
Settings > Your data and agreements has a card called "What you have agreed to". It lists each notice you have agreed to, with its version number and the date you agreed. Each link opens the exact version you read, rather than the current one. The same card shows "Checked as a grown-up", with how and when that check was done.
If you have a question about a notice, ask us from Help in your dashboard, or write to privacy@taletykes.com.
