Backup codes

What backup codes are, how to use one at the two-step check, and what to do if you lost yours.

Backup codes are one-time codes that let you finish the two-step check when your authenticator app isn't available. We show them once, when you turn on two-step sign-in. Save them somewhere safe.

When you get them

When you turn on two-step in Account, then Security, we show a set of backup codes. The page says: "Save them now; we can't show them again." If you close the page without saving them, you can't see them again.

Save them

  • Write them down and keep the paper somewhere safe, away from your phone.
  • Or store them in a password manager.
  • Don't keep them in an email to yourself.

Use a backup code

  1. Sign in with your email link or code.
  2. At the two-step check (/account/verify), type a backup code in the box where the 6-digit code goes.
  3. Continue to your account.

The check accepts either a 6-digit authenticator code or a backup code.

If you are locked

After 5 wrong two-step codes, the check locks for 15 minutes. The page says: "Too many tries. Wait 15 minutes, or sign out and use a backup code." You can wait, or sign out and sign back in using a backup code.

If it doesn't work

  • A backup code is rejected. Check each character. Codes work once, so one you have already used won't work again.
  • You have no backup codes and no authenticator. Email support@taletykes.com from the address on the account, and tell us you can’t finish the two-step check. There is no way to skip the check from the sign-in screen.
  • You signed in with a passkey. You do not need a backup code for that sign-in. A passkey counts as two-step.

Common questions

Do I need backup codes if I use a passkey? A passkey signs you in without the app. Keep the codes anyway for the days you sign in by email.

Can I get a new set? If you need a new set, write to support@taletykes.com from the account's address.
