Sign in with an 8-digit code
How to get an 8-digit sign-in code by email when the link is hard to open, and what its limits are.

If the email link is hard to open, ask for an 8-digit code instead. We email the code, and you type it on the sign-in page. A code lasts 5 minutes and you get 5 tries.
Steps
- Ask for an email link as usual. You land on the page "Check your email" at /auth/check-email.
- Press "Email me a code instead".
- Open the email. The subject starts with the code, in the form "1234 5678 is your TaleTykes code". It comes from hello@mail.taletykes.com.
- Type the 8 digits on the sign-in page.
When to use a code
- Your mail app is on a different device from the browser where you want to sign in.
- Your mail app cuts links and you see "This link is incomplete".
- A security program in your mail keeps using the link before you do.
Limits
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Code lifetime | 5 minutes |
| Tries per code | 5 |
| Code emails you can ask for | 3 per 5 minutes |
| Code tries per 5 minutes | 5 |
If it doesn't work
- "That code didn't work. Check it, or ask for a new one." Check each digit, then ask for a new code. See The code didn't work.
- Too many tries. Wait for the 5-minute window to pass. See Too many tries.
- No email. Check your spam folder and the address you typed. See Sign-in email didn't arrive.
Common questions
Is a code less safe than a link? Both go to your email and expire after 5 minutes. A code is also limited to 5 tries.
Do I still need two-step sign-in? If you turned on two-step, or you have a teacher account, you will be asked for your authenticator code after you sign in. See Two-step sign-in.
