The 8-digit code didn't work

Why a sign-in code can be rejected, how many tries you have, and how to get a fresh one.

Updated November 2, 2026 · 2 min read

If the page says "That code didn't work. Check it, or ask for a new one," the code is wrong, old, or used up. Codes last 5 minutes and allow 5 tries. Ask for a new code and type it carefully.

Check these first

  1. Digits. The code has 8 digits. Compare each one against the email.
  2. The newest email. If you asked for more than one code, only the latest is the one to use.
  3. Time. The code expires 5 minutes after we send it.
  4. The right address. Make sure you signed in with the same address the email went to.

Ask for a new code

  1. Go back to the sign-in page. Enter your address and ask for a link.
  2. On the "Check your email" page, press "Email me a code instead".
  3. Wait for the new email, then type its code.

When you go over, wait a few minutes. See Too many tries.

If you meant the two-step code

Two-step sign-in uses a different code: 6 digits from your authenticator app, or a backup code. If you typed the 8-digit email code there, or the reverse, it will be rejected. See Two-step sign-in and Backup codes.

If it doesn't work

  • Characters look alike. Copy the digits from the email if you can, instead of typing them by hand.
  • The email is slow. Wait for it to arrive before you ask again. Each request is counted.
  • Try the link. Use the link in the same email instead. See Sign in with an email link.

Common questions

Can I reuse a code? No. Ask for a new one each time.

Will a wrong code lock my account? No. It only locks the code-entry step for a short time.
