Give books as a gift

How to buy books for another family, what they receive, how long the code lasts, and what we keep about you.

Plans and billingUpdated

You can buy books for a family you know on Give somebody books. You do not need an account, you pay once and nothing renews, and the code you get is good for a year. You choose how many books there are, and the family's children choose what each one is about.

What you can give

A gift is one of the same three packs a family can buy for themselves.

BooksPrice
10$8.99
30$23.99
40$29.99

Prices are in US dollars. Sales tax is added at checkout in the places where we are registered to collect it. A picture book uses 1 of the books and a chapter book uses 2, depending on the reader's age.

Step by step

  1. Open Give somebody books.
  2. Under "How many books", choose a pack.
  3. In "Your email address", enter the address for your receipt and the code.
  4. If you would like us to send the code to the family as well, enter their address in "Send it straight to them (optional)". Leave it empty to pass the code on yourself.
  5. If you like, write something in "A message (optional)", up to 300 characters.
  6. Press "Buy the gift" and pay on our payment provider's page.
  7. You come back to the gift page, which thanks you and says the code is on its way.

We do not ask anything about the children who will read the books: not their names, their ages or their reading levels.

What happens next

  • You receive an email called "Your TaleTykes gift is ready", with the code in it. You can write the code in a card, forward the email, or read it out.
  • The family, if you gave their address, receives an email called "Somebody has sent you books", with the code and your message. It does not say who the gift is from unless your message does.
  • They use the code on "Use a code" in their account, and the books are added straight away. Books from a gift never expire. Use a code walks them through it.

The family needs a TaleTykes account to use the code, and can set one up after receiving it. We never tell you anything about the family who used your gift, and we tell them nothing about you beyond your message.

Your message

Your message is shown to the grown-up who uses the code, and to the family in their email if you gave their address. It is never shown to a child. Keep it to a card's length: the box takes 300 characters.

How long the code lasts

The code works for a year from when you buy it. If it runs out before anyone uses it, the family can write to us, and a person will look at it.

What we keep about you

  • A one-way hash of your email address, rather than the address itself. The hash is enough to match a refund or a question to your purchase.
  • A one-way hash of the family's address, if you gave one.
  • Your message, so we can show it when the code is used.
  • If you were signed in to your own TaleTykes account when you bought it, a note of which account bought the gift.

Your card is handled by our payment provider, and never by us. If you gave the family's address, it passes through our payment provider so that we can send them the code, and we keep only the hash of it. The companies we work with are listed in the privacy notice.

Refunds

If you want your money back, write to us. If a gift is refunded in full before anyone has used the code, the code stops working. Once the code has been used, the books stay with the family who used it, and books from a gift are not refundable once used. Refunds has more.

If gifts are not on sale

Now and then we pause gifts. The gift page then says "Not on sale just now", and a gift that has already been bought can still be used. If you buy several gifts in a short time, you may see "That is a lot of gifts at once. Please try again later."

For anything about a gift you bought, write to support@taletykes.com or use Contact, and include the email address you used to buy it.
