Update your card

How to change the card your plan is paid with, and the reminder we send before a card expires.

Plans and billingUpdated

Your card details are held by our payment provider rather than by us, so you change your card on their page. You reach it from Plan and books, and it takes a minute.

Changing your card

  1. Open Plan and books. You can also get there from Settings > "Plan and books".
  2. Press "Manage your plan". If a payment has failed, or your card expires within 30 days, the same button reads "Update your card".
  3. On our payment provider's page, add the new card and make it the one your plan uses.
  4. Return to Plan and books.

Your next payment is taken from the card you chose. If a payment was waiting, we email you "That is sorted" once it has gone through.

Only the grown-up who owns the account can change the card. Grown-ups you share your family with cannot see your payments.

If the button is not there

"Manage your plan" is only shown for a plan you pay for by card. If a group pays for your plan, or we gave it to you, there is no card to update; see Plans paid by a group, or given by us.

The reminder before a card expires

A card stops working at the end of the month printed on it. Plan and books always shows that month, in a line that begins "The card on your plan expires at the end of". When the end of the month is 30 days away or less, and your plan is running or on its free days, we also let you know:

  • The line on Plan and books adds "so please update it to keep your books coming", and the "Manage your plan" button reads "Update your card".
  • An email called "Your card is about to expire" arrives. It says that nothing has gone wrong and nothing has stopped yet.
  • A note on your Home page under "Needs your attention" says "The card on your plan expires soon".

If the card expires before you replace it, the next payment will not go through, and the steps in When a payment does not go through begin.

Your email address and your payments

Any receipt our payment provider emails you goes to the address you sign in with. If you change that address in Settings > "Account and security", we pass the new one to our payment provider too. Change your email or password walks through it, and Receipts, invoices and sales tax covers what you get after paying.

If the payment page will not accept your card, write to us from Help in your dashboard and choose "A payment, a plan or a refund".
