Consent choices explained
The three choices on the consent page, which one is required, and how to change your mind.
Updated November 3, 2026 · 2 min read · For families
The consent page has three choices. One is required for your child to use TaleTykes. The other two are optional. You choose for each child separately.
The three choices
| Choice | Required? | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and lessons | Yes | Your child's reading space, with the information listed in What we collect |
| Voice recording | No | Read-aloud recordings of your child, kept 30 days |
| Your child's name in stories | No | Your child's name shown in stories. The name is added on the device and never sent to AI. |
A child without the required choice can't sign in. Their card on the family page says "Needs your OK". Once consent is granted it says "Ready to read".
How we check that you're a parent
The page asks for a card check: a $0.50 charge on a card, refunded right away, entered on Stripe's page. It also starts your trial. After the first child, your card isn't checked again. This is one of the methods the law accepts for verifying a parent.
Changing your choices
Open Family & access from the menu. Under Consent, each child has a row for each choice with its status. Press Withdraw to switch off voice or the name choice, or to withdraw consent for reading and lessons. Press Turn on to add voice or the name choice later. Only a parent on the account can do this; a caregiver can't.
If you withdraw "Reading and lessons", your child is signed out, we stop collecting, and we delete your child's information within 30 days.
Common questions
Do I have to turn on voice?
No. Your child can use the service without it.
What if I skip the optional choices?
Nothing else changes. Your child still reads.
Is there one consent for the whole family?
No. Consent is per child and per feature.
Steps for the page itself are in Give consent. Other questions: contact us.
