Private browsing and cookies
Why private windows and cleared cookies sign you out and un-trust a reading device, and what to change.

TaleTykes uses cookies to keep you signed in and to remember which browsers you have trusted for your children. A private window or cleared cookies removes both. Use a normal window and keep cookies for our site.
What cookies do here
- Your sign-in. Your adult session is held in a cookie.
- A trusted reading device. When you press Trust this device, the browser keeps a trust cookie for 180 days.
- A child's sign-in. A child's session is also held in a cookie while they read.
We do not use third-party analytics, ads or trackers. The cookies we set are for these jobs.
What happens if cookies are gone
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Private or incognito window | The browser forgets everything when you close it. You are signed out and the device is not trusted. |
| You cleared cookies | You are signed out and the device is no longer trusted. |
| Cookies blocked for our site | You can't stay signed in. |
| Browser set to clear cookies on close | You are signed out each time you close it. |
Fix it
- Use a normal window, not a private one.
- In your browser settings, allow cookies for taletykes.com.
- If your browser clears cookies when it closes, add taletykes.com as an exception.
- Sign in again. See Sign in with an email link.
- Open Children, then Sign-in and devices on your child's card, and press Trust this device again.
If it doesn't work
- You are signed out right away. Another extension or content blocker may block cookies. Turn it off for our site.
- Your child's picture is not on "Who is reading?". See My child isn't on "Who is reading?".
- A school or work computer wipes cookies. Sign in each time, or use a personal device.
Common questions
Is a private window ever fine? For signing in once on a computer that isn't yours, yes. It is a good choice there. Don't trust a browser for reading in a private window.
Does clearing cookies delete my account or my child's books? No. It only signs the browser out and removes its trust.
