Why was I signed out?
How long adult sessions last for parents, teachers and staff, and what the signed-out message means.
Updated November 2, 2026 · 2 min read
We sign adults out after a period of no use, and after a maximum length no matter how often you use the site. This protects accounts that can see children's information. Sign in again with a link or code.
What you'll see
The sign-in page says: "You were signed out after a while away…" It means your session ended. Nothing was lost.
How long sessions last
| Account | Signed out after being idle | Signed out after at most |
|---|---|---|
| Parent | 30 days | 90 days |
| Teacher | 12 hours | 30 days |
| Staff | 8 hours | 24 hours |
Idle means you didn't open any page. The maximum counts from when you signed in, even if you were active.
Other reasons you are signed out
- You pressed sign out. See Sign out.
- You cleared cookies, or you are in a private window. See Private browsing and cookies.
- You opened the site in a different browser. Each browser signs in separately.
Sign back in
- Ask for a new email link, code or use a passkey.
- If two-step is on, enter your authenticator code or a backup code. We ask once each time you sign in on a device.
Children and sessions
Children's sign-ins are separate and shorter. See How long children stay signed in.
If it doesn't work
- You are signed out many times a day. Check that your browser keeps cookies for our site. Some browsers clear them when you close the window.
- You never get the sign-in email. See Sign-in email didn't arrive.
Common questions
Why is the limit shorter for teachers? Teacher accounts can see children's work, so the idle limit is much shorter.
Can I choose a longer session? No. The limits are fixed.
